Als 2015 die Schuldenkrise Griechenlands auf einen Höhepunkt zusteuert, sieht sich Finanzminister Yanis Varoufakis mit Forderungen seitens der Eurozone konfrontiert, die die ökonomische und soziale Lage Griechenlands drastisch verschlimmern würden. Seine Kompromissvorschläge werden jedoch systematisch abgeblockt. Costa-Gavras, Großmeister des engagierten Polittrillers, dramatisiert gewohnt analytisch jene Verhandlungen, die immer mehr zu Ritualen erstarren. Behind closed doors, a human tragedy plays out. A universal theme: a story of people trapped in an inhuman network of power. The brutal circle of the Eurogroup meetings, who impose on Greece the dictatorship of austerity, where humanity and compassion are utterly disregarded. A claustrophobic trap with no way out, exerting pressures on the protagonists which finally divide them. A tragedy in the Ancient Greek sense: the characters are not good or evil, but driven by the consequences of their own conception of what is right to do. A tragedy for our very modern time. Director's Biography
Costa-Gavras: Costa-Gavras, born in Greece in 1933, studied literature at the Sorbonne and filmmaking at the IDHEC. Among his many awarded and politically committed films are "Z“ (1969), winner of the Best Film in a Foreign Language and Best Editing Academy Awards, "Music Box“ (1989), Golden Bear at Berlin, and "Amen“ (2002), César for Best Screenplay. He has been the president of the Cinémathèque Française since 2007.
