Pelican Blood

Polizeipferdetrainerin Wiebke adoptiert ihr zweites Kind, die fünfjährige Raya. Schon kurz nachdem Raya auf der Ranch der Alleinerziehenden angekommen ist, zeigt das in seiner Vergangenheit offenbar schwer traumatisierte Mädchen gewalttätiges und antisoziales Verhalten. Expert*innen sprechen Warnungen aus, aber Wiebke ist fest entschlossen, Raya zu helfen - und geht dafür bis an ihre Grenzen und darüber hinaus. Katrin Gebbes zweiter Langfilm ist wahr gewordener Elternalbtraum als finsteres Psychodrama: herausragendes und herausforderndes Beunruhigungskino mit einer fantastischen Nina Hoss. In the ancient Legend of the Pelican, the mother bird feeds her famished, violently-pecking offspring with rivulets of her own blood. The protagonist of Katrin Gebbe’s intense horror-drama @Pelican Blood@ performs a similar act of self-immolation to liberate her newly-adopted child from deep psychological trauma. Like her highly divisive debut feature @Nothing Bad Can Happen@, Gebbe’s film is certain to provoke, infuriate and dazzle in equal measure. She’s out to draw blood. (Alex Saveliev, Film Threat)

Director's Biography
Katrin Gebbe: Katrin Gebbe shot her first experimental films at the Academy of Visual Arts and Design in the Netherlands, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, USA, and she attended the Hamburg Media School, where she directed award-winning short films. Her first feature “Nothing Bad Can Happen” (2013) premiered at Un Certain Regard in Cannes. "Pelican Blood" opened the Horizons Section of the Venice International Film Festival.
