Adele Tullis gradliniges Filmdokument handelt von starren Genderrollen, die Regisseurin richtet die Kamera auf Alltägliches: wie Mädchen zu Prinzessinnen geschminkt werden, wie ein Vater seinen Sohn auf ein Motorradrennen begleitet und wie Teeniemädchen sich mit dem angehimmelten YouTube-Star ablichten lassen. Sie zeigt Jungs beim Ego-Shooter-Spielen, das Fotoshooting eines frisch verheirateten Paares, ausufernde Junggesellinnenabschiede, filmt einen Kurs, der jungen Männern zeigen soll, wie man zum Alphamännchen wird. In der kommentarlosen Aneinanderreihung ist letzten Endes dann doch ein Kommentar enthalten. (Berlinale)
Adele Tulli’s Normal is a journey through stereotypes about gender, in a society such as the Italian one, between patriarchal traditions and breaks from the pattern. From childhood on, we are “educated” to be “proper” male and female. Normal is what is subject to the norm, not what is “natural.” The preparation of a wedding with the suggestions for the bride-to-be; the coach teaching the boys how to hook up with girls; the selections for Miss Italy exposing the paradox of girls who dream to become scientists while showing themselves off in bikini … Normal shows a complex, multilayered gaze that questions the viewer. Director's Biography
Adele Tulli
In 2018, Adele Tulli completed her PhD at the University of Roehampton in London where she explored subversive film aesthetics within queer and feminist contexts. She is interested in gender studies and visual anthropology. Her films “365 Without 377”, about the struggles of the LGBT community in India, and”Rebel Menopause”, about the feminist activist Thérèse Clerc, have won several awards.
