Der Flughafen Tempelhof in Berlin – das größte Baudenkmal Europas – steht für die monumentale Selbstinszenierung der Nationalsozialisten, ist aber durch die Luftbrücke von 1948/49 auch Symbol der Freiheit. Seit Herbst 2015 dienen einige Hangars als Flüchtlingsnotunterkunft. Der Syrer Ibrahim und der Iraker Qutaiba träumen mit mehr als 2000 Geflüchteten davon, endlich anzukommen. Voller Hoffnung bereiten sie sich mit ÜbersetzerInnen, ÄrztInnen, SprachlehrerInnen und JobvermittlerInnen auf ein neues Zuhause in Deutschland vor. Karim Aïnouz achieves the perfect balance between people and locale in Central Airport THF, a rare observational documentary that recognizes the beauty of spatial forms without forgetting the individuals. Struck by the irony that Berlin’s former Tempelhof Airport, a place of transit amplified by Nazi dreams of grandeur, is now used as a refugee center, the director combines his superb compositional eye with an empathetic glimpse of the lives of a few people living and working in the center. Director's Biography
Karim Aïnouz
Born in Fortaleza, Brazil in 1966, he studied architecture in Brasilia and film at New York University. He was assistant director to Todd Haynes, worked on over 20 films as an editor and has been directing his own films since 1992. In 2014 his film “Praia do Futuro” screened in the Berlinale Competition, and he was one of the directors of Cathedrals of Culture (also 2014).
