A Gentle Creature
Eine Frau lebt allein am Rande einer kleinen russischen Stadt, da ihr Mann im Gefängnis ist. Regelmäßig schickt sie ihm Pakete. Ihr letztes Päckchen allerdings kommt zurück. Weil all ihre Bemühungen, den Grund dafür zu erfahren, scheitern, macht sie sich auf einen langen Weg, um Klarheit über das Schicksal ihres Mannes zu gewinnen. Ihre Reise ans andere Ende Russlands führt sie immer tiefer in einen Sumpf aus Ignoranz, Selbstsucht, Gewalt und Unmenschlichkeit. So gerät ihre Suche nach Gerechtigkeit zum Martyrium.
All kinds of grim, A Gentle Creature from Belarus-born director Sergei Loznitsa peers deep into the Russian soul and nds an unfathomable blackness. Only tenuously related to the Dostoyevsky story of the same name and the 1969 lm adaptation of that source material by Robert Bresson, this harrowing tale revolves around a stoical unnamed woman (Vasilina Makovtseva) stuck in a nightmarish Siberian prison town. Although there are piercing echoes of absurdist fiction by Nikolai Gogol, Franz Kafka and others, as well as mythical journeys to the underworld, Loznitsa's approach is uniquely cinematic. Director's Biography
Sergei Loznitsa
Born in Belarus and grown up in Ukraine, he studied at the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) and has received numerous national and international awards for his documentary films. His feature debut “My Joy” premiered in the main competition at the Cannes International Film Festival 2010. In 2015, Crossing Europe devoted its Tribute to Sergei Loznitsa.
