Scary Mother
Manana, eine 50-jährige Hausfrau, steht vor einem Dilemma: Sie muss sich entscheiden zwischen ihrem Familienleben und ihrer vernachlässigten Liebe zum Schreiben. Sie arbeitet an einem expliziten Erotikthriller. Vor ihrem Mann Anri versteckt sie den Roman aber und bemüht sich, weiter als brave Ehefrau zu funktionieren. Ihre Umgebung ist ganz begeistert von dem Manuskript, als sie aber Anri einen Auszug lesen lässt, ist der entsetzt. Sie ist jedoch bereit, ihrer Arbeit alles zu opfern: Scary Mother erinnert nicht von ungefähr an Motive aus Virginia Woolfs "A Room of One's Own". Und manchmal ist das eben ein Red Room of Pain.
The tension between realising her creative ambitions and the expectations placed on a mother in a traditionally patriarchal society threaten to tear apart 50-year-old Manana (Nata Murvanidze). This bold first feature from Ana Urushadze layers mythology and symbolism over the stark brutalism of a post-communist society. And while it suffers slightly from having a central character who is increasingly unmoored from the world around her – Manana seems both away with the fairies and feverishly internalised – the film makes strong points about gender roles and the sacrifices required in the service of the compulsion to create. Ana Urushadze
Ana Urushadze, born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1990, graduated from the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Georgia State Film University (TAFU) in 2013 and directed several short films. “Scary Mother” is her feature film debut and the winner of the Golden Leopard award in the Best First Feature category at Locarno Festival. It also received an independent jury prize.
