Little Crusader
Der Ritter Bořek macht sich auf den Weg, um seinen Sohn zu finden: Der kleine Jan ist von daheim ausgerissen, nachdem er von einer heiligen Mission für Kinder geträumt hat. Sein alternder Vater versucht ihn verzweifelt aufzuspüren, aber überall, wohin er kommt, ist Jan bereits wieder weitergereist. Aus fragwürdigen Zeugenaussagen rekonstruiert er das Schicksal seines Sohnes. Immer weiter verwischt das Bild des verlorenen Kindes in Bořeks Bewusstsein. In Karlovy Vary, wo er 2017 seine Uraufführung erlebte, wurde Křižáček als erster tschechischer Film überhaupt mit dem Hauptpreis ausgezeichnet.
Little Crusader records the inner conflict of a father coming to terms with his son's disappearance. The boy runs away in search of an illusion, which has more the form of legend than a real basis. The lm gradually reveals the goal of the boy's journey. Literalism and specificity run counter to the film's poetry. The intention is to find only clues and leave the truth about the boy's journey obscured. Mention of danger is precisely what preys on the father's mind. The lm loses sight of the boy and lets the father gather the fragments from the stories of doubtful witnesses. In this way a silenced story emerges beyond the poem. (Václav Kadrnka)
Director's Biography
Václav Kadrnka
Václav Kadrnka was born in 1973 in Zlín, Czechoslovakia. In 1988, he emigrated to the UK, where he studied theatre. From 1999 till 2008 he studied feature film directing at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. His feature debut “Eighty Letters” premiered at the Berlinale 2011. In 2012, Václav Kadrnka was awarded the Czech film critics’ prize for Discovery of the Year.
