Ein Kalkwerk irgendwo in Dänemark: Es ist eine brutale Umgebung, in der die Brüder Emil (Elliott Crosset Hove) und Johan (Simon Sears) arbeiten, männlich, industriell, laut. Als Zuverdienst verkauft Emil an seine Kollegen ein Gesöff aus Chemikalien, die er im Werk klaut. Als ein Kollege an einer Vergiftung erkrankt, könnte Emil schuld sein. Trost findet er in der einzigen Frau, deren bloße Anwesenheit Sehnsüchte weckt. Sie aber fühlt sich zu Emils Bruder Johan hingezogen, was in einem nackten Ringkampf zwischen den Brüdern gipfelt. Hlynur Pálmasons Regiedebüt ist ein Lieblosigkeitsfilm, voll markanter Schwarz-Weiß-Kontraste von Dreck und Schnee und Kalkstaub und finsteren Blicken.
First there is the darkness of a limestone mine, lit only by helmet flashlights and the occasional shower of flinty sparks from a pickax connecting with rock. And then there's the comparative dazzle of the processing plant, bleached white by a settling of lime dust and snow. Somehow these conflicting images are rendered equivalently bleak and scuzzy in Hlynur Pálmason's challenging, deeply weird and yet peculiarly compelling directorial debut, in which a tiny community of Danish workers, clustered around a factory in the middle of nowhere, feels so isolated and remote it could well be on the surface of the moon. Hlynur Pálmason
Born in Iceland in 1984, Hlynur Pálmason, a visual artist and filmmaker, studied at the Danish National Film School. His graduation short “A Painter” (2013) won, among others, Best Short Film at Odense and Reykjavík, while his next short “Seven Boats” (2014) premiered at Toronto. “Winter Brothers” (2017) is his first feature.
