Projectionist

Yuriy Shylov zeichnet das liebevolle Porträt eines Königs in seinem kleinen Reich: Valentyn arbeitet (und wohnt!) seit mehr als 40 Jahren als Vorführer im „Kinopanorama“ im Herzen von Kiew, das 1954 als Flaggschiff sowjetischer Kinokultur eröffnet wurde, und in dem – trotz Modernisierung der Technik – die Zeit stillzustehen scheint, was man auch daran merkt, dass in dem riesigen Kinopalast noch geraucht werden darf. Neben der Arbeit pflegt Valentyn seine kranke Mutter, die ihn ziemlich auf Trab hält, und lädt gerne Freunde und Nachbarn in seine geräumige Vorführ-Wohnung. (Andreas Ungerböck)

Valentyn is over sixty and has worked for more than forty years at Kyiv’s oldest movie theater. You don’t have to twist his arm to go out drinking and dancing – the eccentric man simply ignores his age. He lives a satisfied “cinematic” life while caring for his ill mother with love and a sense of humor. But life puts up new obstacles that he must overcome. Through careful observation, the movie offers both a portrait of the jovial Valentyn and a nostalgic look at the past, personified by the old-timers with whom Valentyn drinks a toast while the movie projector rattles on… (Sandra Hezinová)

Director's Biography
Yuriy Shylov: Yuriy Shylov graduated from the Directing Department of the Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television, and works on feature and documentary projects. In 2015, he made the short film "Weight", the winner of the Audience Award at VGIK International Film Festival, and in 2016 the short documentary "Panorama". "Projectionist“ is his first feature.
